March 2022

Newsletter No.3

...the nights are getting shorter, the days are getting longer - nature is awakening, the mind is also getting brighter - time for renewal, a spirit of optimism is spreading...
Welcome to the first edition of the newsletter this year, which features 2 works for concert band that align with this time of year. In addition, an arrangement of the German Mass for 5-part ensembles will be presented.

Liutbald

The two Old High German name syllables "Liut" (people) and "bald" (bold, brave) together form the meaning of the name Leopold, which is widespread today. This concert march was composed in memory of someone who inspired those around him with his happiness and positive attitude. This march is intended to encourage people to meet each other as friends and to look positively to the future together, even if it sometimes requires a bit of boldness and often bravery.
The march begins in the wood instruments with a musical salute of 3 whole notes, radiating a friendly attitude from afar. After the introduction, it goes on a short hike together in the character of a street march. The friendship grows and with it the self-confidence, which is reflected in a powerful bass solo. In the trio, the friendship motif presented in the introduction is further developed into a relaxed melody that radiates contentment. In the bridging part of the trio, new common goals are set, which in the recapitulation allow us to look positively into the future with palpable anticipation.

The playing time is approx. 4 1/2 minutes in grade 2.5 (Austrian level B).

Stella Nova

Who doesn't know them, the breathtaking pictures from the distant expanses of the universe, which were taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. The aesthetic images of galaxies, star clusters and solar systems. Also of their origin and transience. All of this is happening on a time scale that is difficult for humans to imagine. Even if the formation of a star involves immense forces, extreme temperatures and massive eruptions, from our point of view these processes take place very slowly and steadily. The piece Stella Nova gives the audience the opportunity to mentally observe the birth of a new star. The dark clouds of gas and dust condense, get hotter and hotter, finally the mass ignites and a star begins to shine... The new James-Webb space telescope is about to start its work, which offers an opportunity to relate to current happening.
With a duration of approx. 4 1/2 minutes and difficulty level 2 (Austrian level A), the piece is suitable for a relaxing rest point in the concert programme.

German Mass for 5-part Ensemble

More and more often, liturgical celebrations are no longer musically framed with a large orchestra but with smaller ensembles. For such cases here the German Mass by Franz Schubert for brass and woodwind quintet is available. The arrangements have a level of difficulty of 2 (Austrian level A) and can therefore be played well with less rehearsal effort. 🎢🎡
